Wool Care & Longevity

In Norway, we don’t just wear wool. We live in it. These pieces are designed to be heirlooms passed down from sibling to sibling, surviving years of Ottawa winters. But the secret to wool that lasts a decade lies in the ritual of care.

By choosing organic lanolin and gentle cleansers, you aren't just washing a garment. You are nourishing the fibers and maintaining the natural magic of the fleece.

Lanolin is the natural wax found in sheep's wool that keeps the animal dry and warm. During the cleaning process, some of this magic is lost. By lanolizing your Disana woolens, you are essentially "resetting" the fibers.

It restores the wool's ability to repel moisture and neutralize odors, meaning you can spend more time playing in the snow and less time doing laundry.

When the Ottawa humidity hits and the wool goes into hibernation, storage is key. Always ensure your wool is completely clean and dry before storing.

We recommend airtight bins or cotton bags with cedar blocks or lavender sachets. This protects your investment from moths and moisture until the first frost returns.

The Wool Ritual

Click each step to learn how to care for your heirloom wool.

1. Air Out Instead of Washing

Growing up in Norway, we knew the secret: Wool is self-cleansing. Because of the natural lanolin, dirt and odors stay on the surface. Instead of washing after every wear, simply hang the garment in fresh air for a few hours. It's better for the fibers, and better for the environment.

2. When it's Time for a Wash

Lillelam garments are designed for busy parents. They are machine washable at 40°C (104°F) on a gentle wool cycle.

  • Use Wool Detergent: Only use pH-neutral detergent (no enzymes or bleach).
  • Wash with Like Colors: To keep the natural tones bright.
  • Don't Overload: Only fill the machine half-full to avoid friction.
3. Drying & Shaping

Wool likes to be treated gently. You can dry these pieces flat or hang them up (unless they are soaking wet and heavy). If using a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and a half-full load.

Veronica's Tip for Storage

Before storing wool for the season, always wash it first. Moths and insects are attracted to trace oils and food remains. Store in a sealed container with a small bag of lavender—it smells lovely to us, but moths hate it!
