3x3 Layering 101

In Norway, we say: "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing." Mastering the 3x3 system ensures your child stays dry, warm, and ready for adventure in any season.

01

The Base Layer: Breathability

This layer sits directly against the skin. Its job is to regulate temperature and wick away moisture. Thin Merino wool or a Silk-Wool blend is ideal. Unlike cotton, which gets cold when wet, wool keeps your child warm even if they sweat during active play.

The foundation of comfort.
02

The Mid-Layer: Insulation

The mid-layer creates a pocket of warm air around the body. Boiled wool or thick wool fleece is perfect here. It should be slightly looser than the base layer to allow for movement and air circulation—trapping heat without adding bulk.

The trap for warmth.

The Outer Layer: Protection

The final layer protects against wind, rain, or snow. A high-quality Boiled Wool Overall acts as a natural windbreaker. Because of the lanolin in the wool, light rain and snow will simply bead off the surface, keeping the inner layers dry.

The Nordic suit of armor.

The Seasonal Rule of Thumb

Spring/Fall
Layers 1 + 2
Winter
Layers 1 + 2 + 3

By following this simple 3x3 system, you ensure your heirloom pieces work as hard as they possibly can for your family.
